Above the Abject Tide is a lush hypnotic journey through a mysterious watery world.

Made over the course of six months by Sauin (Pōneke) and Root Basis (Ōtautahi), the album begins on an emotional high with the collaboratively produced titular track, a warm and welcoming celebration of the pair’s love of dub techno. Next, the journey takes a darker, more contemplative turn with Root Basis’ minimal exploration Spores. Sparse and filtered synth textures rotate through a swirling cascade of delays, ringing out endlessly over a simple, yet sporadic drum groove.

Sauin’s Ruru comes through with hazy melancholy, taking the listener through off kilter dub stabs and fog. The pair come together again with Selkie - a spacious take on dubstep, holding form like the ripples of the sea as the tide goes out. Root Basis brings it back to the dance floor with a more driving beat, decorating the space with intricate percussive elements and bouncy, ethereal reverberations on Lichen.

The closing song on the album Ban-sídhe leaves the listener on an introspective and emotional meditation. Taking its name from the Banshee - a supernatural being in Irish and other Celtic folklore whose mournful “keening,” lamentation, at night was believed to foretell the death of a member of the family of the person who heard the spirit.
